What are the Network Slicing Benefits for 5G?
September 3, 2019

As per GSMA report, 5G networks in combination with network slicing help business customers to enjoy connectivity to the specific business requirements that stick to a Service Level Agreement (SLA) agreed with the mobile operator.

From a MNO’s point of view, a NS is an independent E2E logical network that runs on shared physical infrastructure to provide a negotiated service quality. However, the technology enabling network slicing is transparent to business customers.

For Example, Operators might make a partnership with a 3rd party to provide a network dedicated to the given part which is called Network as a Service “NaaS”.

Why Network Slicing is Essential for 5G?

1- Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) could deploy a single infrastructure network slice type that satisfies the needs of multiple verticals, as well as multiple network slices of different types that are delivered as a single product targeted towards business customers who have multiple and different requirements.
Example: a vehicle may need a high bandwidth slice for infotainment and an ultra-reliable slice for assisted driving).

2- Network Slicing enables Isolation which is essential to guarantee Service Level Agreement (SLA) with a 3rd Party by dedicating network resources for a given service.
Example: MNO can assign dedicated network logical nodes like AMF,SMF, UPF, .. etc for the 3rd party to support resource provisioning.

3- Security can be provisioned per slice, as each slice will have different security requirements. So security strength will be according to slice requirements.
