I think It’s not straightforward to determine the optimal RAN topology and associated operation model.

There are different parameters will contribute at take a decision like:

  1. Existing network footprint.
  2. RF Strategy.
  3. Operating costs.
  4. Device capabilities.
  5. Usage Patterns.

The Transport Network is very important as it connects between NG-RAN functional modules and therefore determines which deployment topologies are possible which more cost effective.

The Primary Functional Elements of 5G RAN:

  1. RU: Radio Unit.
  2. DU: Distributed Unit.
  3. CU: Central Unit.

So based on 5G Use Case, the RAN technology decision will be taken, for example for latency sensitive application, the operator will may have to deploy the CU/DU at the cell site to meet latency requirements and availability targets of the end-user service.

Conclusion:
The 5G RAN architecture is therefore dependent on RAN design, the transport network and end-user service.
