5.5G and 5G+ in the UAE, What is the story?
September 30, 2025

If you’re living in the UAE, you’ve probably noticed the new billboards across the streets promoting the latest evolution of 5G technology. Etisalat is calling it 5.5G (5G-Advanced) while DU brands it as 5G+ — but in reality, they’re both referring to the same milestone: 5G-Advanced.

So, what is 5G-Advanced?

5G-Advanced (3GPP Release 18 and beyond) is the natural evolution of 5G, bridging today’s 5G networks with the future 6G. It enhances existing 5G capabilities while introducing new features, such as higher data speeds and improved spectrum efficiency. Also, it supports AI-native air interfaces and intelligent network management. Plus, it supports advanced IoT capabilities (massive connections + reduced latency) and integration with non-terrestrial networks (satellites).

The key features of 5G-Advanced
  • AI and Machine Learning (AI/ML): 5G-Advanced integrates AI and ML capabilities directly into the radio access network (RAN) and core network. This enables intelligent network management, traffic prediction, and dynamic optimization of network resources, improving performance and energy efficiency.
  • Enhanced performance: Enhancements to Massive MIMO boost network capacity and data rates, while new handover procedures reduce service interruption times for more seamless mobility.
  • Extended reality (XR) support: For immersive experiences like cloud gaming, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR), 5G-Advanced offers ultra-low latency and higher data rates through features like Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable Throughput (L4S).
  • High-precision positioning: A significant advance for industrial automation and logistics, 5G-Advanced supports centimeter-level location accuracy, particularly in indoor environments where GPS is unavailable.
  • Reduced Capability (RedCap) devices: This standard supports simpler, lower-cost, and more power-efficient devices for mass-scale internet of things (IoT) applications, such as wearables and industrial sensors.
  • Sustainable networks: 5G-Advanced introduces new, intent-based energy-saving features to reduce the power consumption of mobile networks and help operators reach their sustainability goals.
  • Expanded connectivity: Non-terrestrial network (NTN) support integrates satellite access, extending coverage to remote areas and providing greater network resilience.

Towards 5G Advanced and Release 18

DU has officially launched a page detailing the eligibility requirements for using 5G+, including a 5G+ compatible device and a 5G+ compatible SIM. The services will be initially available in major landmarks and downtown areas across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and other Emirates. Coverage will be expanded to additional locations by the end of the year. Additionally, in August 2025, Du achieved a peak data rate of ~ 5.4 Gbps using 5G-Advanced.

Etisalat announced this via its Group CEO, Hatem Dowidar, on LinkedIn, introducing “5.5G” or “5G-Advanced”, the same acronym used by #Huawei. However, I didn’t find a separate page about “T&C” on the Etisalat home page.

Looking ahead to 6G

5G-Advanced is a crucial transitional stage that lays the groundwork for next-generation mobile networks. Many of its foundational technologies—including AI-native architecture, integrated sensing and communication, and a focus on sustainability—are direct precursors to the key building blocks of 6G. While 5G-Advanced represents the peak of 5G’s evolution, it simultaneously charts a course toward a more deeply integrated, intelligent, and human-centric 6G era.
